Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, aided by Friday's sharp rise on Wall Street. In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 72.57 points, or 0.80 percent, from Friday to 9,186.70. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.34 points, or 0.65 percent, to 829.04. The Second Section edged higher.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan retained his overwhelming lead over his challenger Ichiro Ozawa as the public's preferred choice for the nation's leader in opinion polls carried Monday by two major Japanese newspapers. Kan won 65 percent support against Ozawa's 17 percent in the Asahi Shimbun's nationwide telephone survey conducted over the weekend, and 66 percent against his rival's 18 percent in the Yomiuri Shimbun's from Friday to Sunday.

Whale meat has been slowly back in lunch menus at Japanese schools since around 2005, according to a recent Kyodo News survey released Saturday, as the meat was made available at low prices for such use in a bid to expand consumption and some whaling towns are trying to pass on traditional food culture to children. Of about 29,600 public elementary and junior high schools nationwide offering lunches for students, 5,355 schools, or 18 percent, responded they had served whale meat in their lunches at least once in fiscal 2009 through March 2010, according to the survey conducted from June to August this year.

The Japan Tourism Agency will promote foreign travel to Japan by introducing the country's sightseeing spots to potential foreign tourists on a country-by-country basis, agency officials said Wednesday. The agency will conduct promotional activities targeting 12 nations and areas that have sent a large number of visitors to Japan by choosing priority sightseeing spots for each country and area, the officials said.

A Japanese freelance journalist who was released Saturday after going missing in late March denied late Sunday that his kidnappers were Taliban insurgents as identified by Afghan security authorities. The U.S. dollar traded at the lower 84 yen zone early Monday in Tokyo, little changed from its level in New York late Friday. At 9 a.m., the dollar fetched 84.41-51 yen against 84.38-48 yen in New York and 84.29-30 in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

International scientists are advising countries to try to reduce their catches of bluefin tuna in the western and central Pacific, particularly young fish, citing a decline in stocks since the mid-1990s, according to a recent report. Estimated stocks of the Pacific bluefin tuna declined in terms of spawning biomass in 2008 to below the average level for the period from 1952 to 2007, the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission's scientific committee says in a report. Japan is the world's biggest catcher of the fish.
